Inspera Marking and feedback
Refer to the Inspera grade workspaces for an overview of the Grade workspaces.
This guide provides instructions on the following aspects of marking:
- Access your test in Grade for marking
- View student responses
- Filter questions
- Override the scoring of auto-marked questions
- Mark manually marked questions
- Highlight student responses
- Annotate student responses
- Mark manually marked questions using bands and criteria
- Mark manually marked questions using rubric
Access your test in Grade for marking
- Log in to Inspera Assessment (https://uqi.inspera.com/admin)
- Click on the Grade tab.
- Click on the required exam link. Optionally, you can enter your test name in the Search textbox.
Note: Marking in Inspera can be commenced once the test status is Finished.
Planner needs to:
- add graders to the test for marking, and also
- add themselves as a grader in the test
View student responses
Notes: Marking has to be completed in the Marking tab in the Grader workspace regardless of your role in Inspera.
Tip: Click on the up arrow in the Planner to minimize the Planner workspace.
When you access student submissions from the Marking tab from the Grader workspace, you will see the following details:
- Student ID/question number: The first student's submission - Question 1 on the list will be displayed. For example, s3234567/1 indicates that you are viewing student s3234567's response to Question 1, both question and response.
- Question: Allows the grader to see the question without viewing student's response to the question.
- Attachment: If applicable and if a student has attached a file for that question, the grader can see the uploaded attachment.
- Similarity: To view the similarity score generated for a short answer or essay response.

- Expand the student response: for a better view.
Collapse the response after finishing viewing/marking.
- Hide the question text: for a better view of the response (especially when the question is long)
Show the question text
- Additional options for the answer:
- Open in new tab: The student's answer is opened in a new tab.
- Help: Links to Inspera's guides regarding the Answer tab.
- Print comments: Allows the download of comments that the original or other markers have made to the student's answer.
- Print and download submission: Opens a new tab to view the student's entire assessment such as the original question and their response. It allows the ability to be printed.
- Print question for all candidates: Opens a new tab to view the specific question for all students. It allows the ability to be printed.
Filter questions
Questions can be filtered for marking, moderation, or review purposes. The most common use-case is to mark by questions. Graders can filter the questions assigned and mark a question at a time for all students. The following instruction guide provides an example of filtering the manually marked questions.
- Click on the All questions drop-down menu:
- The question types will be displayed.
- Manually marked: Displays all questions that are categorised as manually marked questions such as Essay and Upload Assignment, whether they are completely marked or not.
- Automatic marks: Displays all questions that are categorised as automatically marked questions such as Multiple Choice, Drag and drop and Hotspot, whether they are completely marked or not.
- Answered questions: Displays all questions that have been answered.
- All questions: Displays all questions, whether they are completely marked or not.
- Select Manually marked from the All questions drop-down menu.
Note: Question 1 in this test is auto-marked, so it is red out. - Click on the question list.
- Select the question you are assigned to mark; i.e., Question 21.
- The selected question (#21) will be displayed.
- When completing the marking of a question, click on the down arrow to move to the next student.
Note: the screenshot displays the first student on the list, so there is only one option to move to the next student.
- When you have marked the second student, the navigation will show two arrows to move forward or backwards on the student list.
You can also filter for the student from the All candidates list.
Override the scoring of auto marked questions
Automatically marked questions are corrected by Inspera Assessment when the candidate submits the test. As a grader, you will see a summary of these questions as well as their marks on the candidates' results page.
In case you have entered incorrect marks for the automatically marked question in the Author stage, as a grader/planner, you can override the scoring of the questions.
Note that this is a manual process. You need to filter the question in case and override the mark for each student.
- Filter the questions, either by question type or question number.
- Click on the Override button.
- Enter the new mark for the question.
- Click on the Apply button.
- The new mark is applied to the question.
Note: When the planner or other graders moderate the marking, the grader's name will be displayed as the editor of the mark for the question.
- Use the navigation functionality to move to the next student.
Mark manually marked questions
Enter and edit marks
- In the Grader workspace, click on the Marking tab.
- Use the filter functionality to navigate to the required question.
- Enter the mark by either:
- Entering the score in the Marks textbox.
- Or selecting the appropriate mark from the Marks drop-down menu.
Use Mark Scheme for marking
If the question has a Mark scheme created during the Question set creation phase, it will appear following the marking area for perusal.
- The text Set by you appears to indicate the question has been marked.
Note: If a marker has amended the mark, the you in the Set by you text will be replaced with the marker's name.
- If you need to amend the mark, click on the Mark textbox and repeat Step 3.
- If you need to reset to the original mark, click on the Reset button.
- Enter the adjusted mark.
Highlight student responses
Create highlight
Note: Highlights can be made on all question types.
Note: Highlights appear in the annotations section and does not appear for the student.
- In the Grader section, click on Marking.
- Navigate to a student's answer.
- Click and drag across the required section.
- Click on Highlight.
Delete highlight
Note: Highlights cannot be edited and require deletion before a new highlight can be created. Editing will enable annotations to be added to highlighted text.
- Click on the highlighted text.
- Click on the Delete icon.
- Click on the Delete button.
Search for highlighted text
- Click on the Select nearby annotations tab.
Show/hide highlights
- Click on the show highlights icon to hide or show the highlights.
Annotate student responses
Annotation on student responses is to provide in-text feedback on student works. It is optional but will be helpful for students to improve their understanding and performance in the next assessment.
Note: Annotations are not automatically available to the students. This function needs to be activated in Deliver (setting).
Create annotation
Note: Annotations can be made on all question types.
- In the Grader section, click on Marking.
- Navigate to a student's answer.
- Highlight the required text.
- Click on Annotate.
- Enter your feedback in the provided textbox.
Tip: Use the text editor for additional editing capabilities.
- Select either Student or Only me from the Save drop-down menu.
Note: The selected option will appear with a red vertical bar.
- Click on Save.
Additional annotation options
Edit annotation
- Click on the edit icon.
- Enter your amended annotation.
- Click on the Save button.
Delete annotation
- Click on the Delete icon.
- Click on the Delete button.
Note: If there were replies to the annotation, they will be deleted as well.
Reply to annotation
If another marker has made an annotation, you are able to reply to it.
- Click on the reply icon.
- Enter the reply in the textbox.
- Click on the Save button.
Search for annotations
- Click on the search annotations icon.
- Enter the word/s that were entered in the annotation.
- Tap on the keyboard's Enter key or equivalent to reveal the annotation with the entered word/s.
- To show all annotations, click on the Clear search button.
Insert page notes
The Page notes area is for graders to provide an overall feedback on extended responses. It is optional but will be helpful for students to improve their understanding and performance in the next assessment.
Note: Page notes are not automatically available to the students. This function needs to be activated in Deliver (setting).
Create page notes
Note: Page notes appear in the annotations section and are not available for the student by default.
- In the Grader or Planner section, click on Marking.
- Navigate to a student's answer.
- Click on the New page note icon.
- Enter your note in the textbox.
- Click on the Save button.
Additional Page note options
Edit Page note
- Click on the edit icon.
- Enter your amended Private note.
- Click on the Save button.
Delete Private note
- Click on the delete icon.
- Click on the Delete button.
Note: If there were replies to the annotation, they will be deleted as well.
Reply to Private note
If another marker has made an annotation, you are able to reply to it.
- Click on the reply icon.
- Enter the reply in the textbox.
- Click on the Save button.
Search for Private notes
- Click on the search annotations icon.
- Enter the word/s that were entered in the Private note.
- Tap on the keyboard's Enter key or equivalent to reveal the Private note with the entered word/s.
- To show all Private notes, click on the Clear search button.
Mark manually marked questions using bands and criteria
The Bands and Criteria must be created in conjunction with the associated question, otherwise the Bands and Criteria marking area will not be available.
- In the Grader section, click on Marking.
- Navigate to a manually marked question.
- Enter the marks for each Criterion in the Criterion textbox.
Tip: Click on the Show all link to see the Bands for easier reference.
- Optionally, to reset to the original mark, click on the Reset link in either:
- Next to the Bands and Criteria heading.
- Next to the required Criterion/s.
- Enter the admended marks for each Criterion in the Criterion textbox as required.
Mark manually marked questions using a rubric
Refer to the Inspera rubrics guide for detailed instructions on creating rubrics and marking using a rubric.
Flag student responses
Flagging student responses is needed when further moderation is required during the marking process. This function needs to be enabled in Deliver and flagging can only be done after students have attempted the assessment.
Enable Flagging
- Click on the Deliver tab.
- Click on the required exam link.
- Click on the Design tab.
- Check the Enable Flagging checkbox.
Flag student
- Click on the Deliver tab.
- Click on the required exam link.
- In the Candidates section, click on View All.
- Check the required student's/students' checkbox.
- Click on Flag.
Note: Click on Unflag to remove the flag from the student/s.
- To check the flagged status of the students, click on the Properties button.
- Check the Flagged checkbox.
Filter students
When marking, graders are able to filter student groups by using the student filter drop-down menu. There are three student filter criteria:
- All candidates: All students, whether marking has been completed or in progress.
- Flagged: Students who the grader has designated for follow-up or other actions.
- Incomplete marking: Students who require marking to be completed.
Automatic navigation
The function Auto Navigation enhances navigation between questions or students when marking by questions or marking by students. This function is useful when marking the manually marked questions or when graders mark their assigned questions, for example, Question 9 in the sample test.
By default, this option is not activated. Graders can activate the auto navigation and:
- Lock the question and move to the next student to mark the same question, or
- Lock the student and move to the next question to mark for the same student.
Navigate by candidate:
- In the Grader or Planner section, click on Marking.
- Select Go to next candidate from the AUTOMATIC NAVIGATION WHEN SETTING MARKS drop-down menu
Note: To navigate to the next candidate, press ALT + down arrown
- Click on the lightning bolt icon to disable automatic navigation.

- Alternatively, select Go to next question from the AUTOMATIC NAVIGATION WHEN SETTING MARKS drop-down menu.
