Total Points column (Ultra)

Why would I use Total Points column?

A Total Points column can be used to calculate the total points for sequenced assessment such as weekly quizzes or reflections.

There are 2 options for creating a Total points column:

Option 1: Total Points column using categories

Best suited to creating a Total Points column when all tasks have been assigned to the same category. Ultra Assessments where marking is enabled and created Gradebook columns will have a category applied to them by default and therefore can be totalled using this option.

Option 2: Total Points column using selected columns

Best suited to creating a Total Points column when tasks are allocated to different categories or are not assigned a category. Assessments created with an LTI tool (e.g. Turnitin, Inspera or Gradescope) will be created without a category by default and therefore can be totalled using this option.

Create a Total Points column using categories

Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
Select Marks from the Gradebook navigation bar.
Decide where you want to place the column, click on the Add new gradebook column (+) button.
Select Add Total Calculation from the drop-down list.
Click on the New Total Calculation Title and enter a meaningful title. e.g Total quiz mark.
Uncheck the Calculate marks based on points earned out of total marked points checkbox.
Note: this setting is unchecked so that all required assessments are included in the grade calculation and assumes that if a task does not have a mark recorded it is treated as though the student has received a mark of zero (0) for that task.
Select Points from the Select a mark schema drop-down box.
Expand the Category and review the columns that are to be totalled (e.g. the test category).
Tip: Click on the down arrow next to the Category to expand.
Click on the Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button for the categories that are not to be included in your total calculation.
Tip: The Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button will change to purple when it is being excluded.
Review Total Points is correct.
Click on the Save button.

Warning: If additional columns or assessments are assigned to the category used for your Total points column they will be automatically included as part of the calculation.

Create a Total Points column using selected columns

Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
Select Marks from the Gradebook navigation bar.
Decide where you want to place the column, click on the Add new gradebook column (+) button.
Select Add Total Calculation from the drop-down list.
Click on the New Total Calculation Title and enter a meaningful title. e.g Total reflection mark.
Uncheck the Calculate marks based on points earned out of total marked points checkbox.
Note: this setting is unchecked so that all required assessments are included in the grade calculation and assumes that if a task does not have a mark recorded it is treated as though the student has received a mark of zero (0) for that task.
Select Points from the Select a mark schema drop-down box.
Expand Additional items.
Tip: Click on the down arrow next to Additional items to expand.
Click on the Unlink (Link icon with diagonal line) button to add it to the calculation.

Tip: After Unlinking the Gradebook column it will be separated from the category.
Click on the Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button for the categories that are not to be included in your total calculation.
Tip: The Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button will change to purple when it is being excluded.
Review Total Points is correct.
Click on the Save button.
