Create a Mark Schema (Pass/Fail) (Ultra)

Why would I create a mark schema (Pass/Fail grades)?

A Grading Schema of pass/fail (Satisfactory/ Not Yet Satisfactory, Completed/ Not Completed, Attended/Absent, P/N) is based on percentage ranges. i.e. if a student scores 88% on a task a Pass mark will be displayed in Gradebook.

Note: Schools can request that their grading schema is added to the Blackboard template. i.e. The mark schema would already be set up in all courses and an option available for use in Gradebook columns. Refer to the Request a School Mark Schema instructions below.

Note: If you set the column as out of 1, if you enter 0 fail is displayed, if you enter 1 Pass is displayed.

Create a mark schema (Pass/Fail)

Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
Select Marks from the Gradebook navigation bar.
Click on the Settings button to access Gradebook Settings menu.
Select Manage Mark Schemas under Mark Schemas.
Click on the Add mark schema button.
Click on the Enter name textbox, enter a meaningful name for the mark schema. e.g. Pass/fail.
Click on the Add button.
Click on the Grade Name textbox and enter the mark starting with Pass, the last mark entered should be Fail.
Click on the From textbox and enter the lower boundary for each mark. e.g. 50% and 100% for Pass.
Repeat steps 8 & 9 for the Fail mark.
Tip: If you are creating a mark schema for a Non-graded pass course you will need to use P (for pass) and N (for fail)
Click on the Save button.

Edit a mark schema (Pass/Fail)

Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
Select Marks from the Gradebook navigation bar.
Click on the Settings button to access Gradebook Settings menu.
Select Manage Mark Schemas under Mark Schemas.
Click on the desired Mark schema.
Click on the Mark schema name to edit the schema name.
Click on the mark in the Mark Name column to edit the mark.
Click on the mark range in the Mark Range column to edit the mark range.
Click on the Save button.

Copy a mark schema

Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
Select Marks from the Gradebook navigation bar.
Click on the Settings button to access Gradebook Settings menu.
Select Manage Mark Schemas under Mark Schemas.
Click on the desired Mark schema.
Click on the 3 dots (elipsis).
Click on the Copy button.
Click on the Enter name textbox, change the name for the mark schema. e.g. Non-graded pass.
Click on the Copy button.
Update mark scehma, for further information refer to the Edit a mark schema (Pass/Fail) section.

Use a mark schema

Request a School mark schema

Schools can request that their mark schema to be added to the Ultra course template. i.e. The mark schema would be already set up in all courses and an option available for Gradebook columns.

Note: The mark schema request must be submitted 6 months before the start of the semester in which the school plans to use the schema. Course stubs based on the Blackboard template are created 6 months in advance.

Seek approval from your head of school to have the school grading schema added to the Blackboard template.
Log a job with help@elearning.uq.edu.au with the subject line [your school] school grade schema template i.e. Business school mark schema template.
Include with the job a screenshot of the required mark schema i.e.
Note: Ensure you factor into the mark schema whether results are rounded up.
