Improve PDF accessibility in Learn.UQ courses

The following accessibility issues are often identified with PDF files uploaded to Learn.UQ courses, most of which can be addressed within the course itself using course accessibility tools (Blackboard Ally):

  1. The PDF is untagged
  2. The PDF does not have a title
  3. The PDF does not have a language set
  1. The PDF contains text with insufficient contrast
  2. The PDF contains images without a description

2. The PDF does not have a title

A PDF title is needed to help screen readers announce a document, as the title is not visible in the document.

  1. Click on the Accessibility Score icon. For more information, refer to the Review accessibility scores and improve accessibility guide.

Note: It usually takes between 15 - 90 seconds for new content to be scanned and an accessibility score to be generated, however it may take longer for larger or more complex content.Accessibility score icon is highlighted

  1. Click on the All issues button to view the full list of identified accessibility issues.
  2. Select This PDF does not have a title.

This PDF does not have a title is highlighted

  1. Enter a descriptive title for the document in the Enter a PDF title textbox.

Note: ​​​​​The title you enter must be different to the file name.

  1. Click on the Apply Fix button.

  1. Your selected language set will then be applied to the PDF file.
