Turnitin (Ultra)
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is an assignment submission tool that has functions for:
- online student assignment submission
- text matching
- online marking and feedback
- peer marking.
Turnitin GradeScope is an additional tool for the submission and marking of handwritten assessments. GradeScope can also be used for the submission of computer code assignments that can be manually or automatically marked.
Why would I use Turnitin?
You can set up online assignment submission (a variety of file types) for students and then mark the assignments online or download them.
Note: If creating a Turnitin Assignment for one student (possibly for the purpose of a resubmission due to an academic integrity issue), set release conditions so that other students are not notified. Refer to the Content Release Conditions guide by Anthology.
The text matching function (PDF, Word and PowerPoint files only) generates a Similarity Report to show any text that matches sources found in the Turnitin database. This includes web content, previously submitted assignments, and subscription-based journals and publications. The Similarity Report can be used as a tool to teach students how to properly acknowledge sources as well as highlighting possible plagiarism issues. Please refer to the UQ's Student Integrity and Misconduct Policy.
Note: We do not recommend entering grades directly via the Ultra Gradebook to avoid data being overridden when grades are synchronised with Turnitin. If you need to override a grade, we recommend creating an additional manual column in Gradebook to enter marks.
The online marking and feedback function allows you to annotate student assignments (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and image files only), give feedback using a rubric (all file types) and return marked assignments and grades to students electronically. You can also use this tool to give feedback on assignments that do not require a file submission, such as oral presentations. The students' marks are also automatically transferred to Gradebook in Blackboard.
The PeerMark tool allows students to review other students' work. Use this formatively for students to gain an understanding of other perspectives and to improve their critical evaluation skills. If you use this summatively, ensure its use is presented in the Course Profile.
The GradeScope tool allows the submission and marking of handwritten assessment and computer code assignments. It can be set up in two ways - 'homework' for students to upload and submit a file themselves, or for teaching staff to upload scanned documents of an exam.
