Channel settings in Teams (Original)

This guide provides instructions on the different settings of a channel in Teams:

Check the visibility of channels in your course team
Show and hide channels in Microsoft Teams to keep up with important channels and hide the ones you don't need
Channel notifications can be customised to focus your updates on the important channels.
Private channel permissions to allow more collaboration space for students in their private group channels.

Show channels

A course team at UQ has 5 channels in its template among which 4 channels are hidden. When you first access a new course team, as course coordinator or team owner, you need to unhide/show these channels for better accessibility.

Click on the Hidden channels button.

Click on the more options (...) next to the channel's name.

Select the Show option from the menu.

Hide channels

Click on the more options (...) next to the channel's name.

Select the Hide option from the menu.

Channel notifications

Click on the more options (three dots) next to the channel's name.

Select the Channel notifications option from the menu.

The Channel notification settings will be displayed. Choose the settings you want.

New post notifications

Banner and feed: You will see the notification in the Activity in Teams and the preview banner on the channel. You can select the Include replies check box to enable notifications for replies.
Only show in feed: You will only see the notifications in the Activity in Teams on the channel. You can select the Include replies check box to enable notifications for replies.

Off: You will not receive any notifications on the channel.

Channel mentions notifications

Banner and feed: If someone tag @you, you will see the notification in the Activity in Teams and the preview banner on the channel.
Only show in feed: If someone tag @you, you will only see the notifications in the Activity in Teams on the channel.
Off: If someone tag @you, you will not receive any notifications on the channel.

Private channel permissions

Course team permissions (what owners, members and guests in a team can do) are set up by default. It is recommended that you do not change the team permission settings.

Team permission settings are applied in standard and private channels.

If you want students to have more space for collaboration in their private group channels, you might need to edit the channel permissions to allow them to create, edit and remove tabs.

Click on the more options (three dots) next to the channel's name.

Select the Manage channel option from the menu.

Click on the Settings buttons.
Click on the Member permissions buttons.
Select the Allow members to create, update, and remove tabs checkbox.
