In Inspera, a stimulus is any piece of supporting material that students view alongside one or more questions.

a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }

A stimulus is:

  • Non‑question content (it does not collect marks or responses)
  • Shown side‑by‑side with questions in the Question Set
  • Used to provide information, context, or data that students need to answer the related questions

a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }

Why use a stimulus?

  • Keeps related information and questions together on screen
  • Reduces scrolling by displaying content in a split‑screen layout
  • Allows multiple questions to reference the same information

a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }

Common stimulus examples:

  • Case study text
  • Diagrams, charts, or data tables
  • Images or figures
  • Audio or video clips
  • Reading passages
  • Scenario information
