To save time on scanning and marking if your exam questions are long, you can print (for central exams - order printing) the question booklet and the answer booklet separately. Both booklets will be printed on A4 paper, and stapled in the top left corner.
You can combine the written answers with the Gradescope bubble sheets - Multiple Choice Questions.
Answer booklet
- Add detailed instructions to the cover page. Sample instructions:
Sample instructions: Answer Q1 – Q3 questions in this booklet. Write answers in the space provided for each question. If you run out of space answering any of the questions, additional pages are provided at the end of the answer booklet. State clearly what question(s) you are answering. OR Answer Q16-Q20 in the answer booklet. ONLY write answers in the space provided for each question. Working outside the designated space will NOT BE MARKED. |
- The next pages should be the designated answer areas clearly labelled (e.g. Question 1 (a), Question 1 (b) etc.).
- (Optionally) If you want your students to have extra space to write their answers, you can include additional pages with clear instructions (e.g. Additional page(s). If you ran out of space answering any of the questions, you can continue here. Please STATE CLEARLY WHAT QUESTION(S) YOU ARE ANSWERING.) Alternatively, please state that Answers outside the designated area will not be marked. – sample paper attached.
Questions booklet
- Prepare a separate file with the exam questions.
- Use the cover sheet - sample paper attached.
- The file should NOT have an exam cover sheet because there is only one cover sheet allowed per exam and it will be used in the answer booklet.
Bubble sheets
If you are using MCQs for your exam, include the questions in the question booklet (usually as part A of the exam). Sample answer booklet cover page instructions:
PART A: Multiple Choice Questions. Answer Q1-15 in the bubble sheet template provided. PART B: Short response questions. Answer Q16-Q20 in the answer booklet. ONLY write answers in the space provided for each question. Working outside the designated space will NOT BE MARKED. |
QR codes
This feature allows you to generate a PDF file containing labelled copies of your exam paper. You can download and distribute the labelled printouts to give each student a copy of the exam with a unique label on each page. Students will then complete their work on the labelled pages.
When you scan in students’ submissions, Gradescope will use the labels to automatically group the pages of each student’s submission, no matter the order they were scanned or uploaded. To have this feature added to your courses, please contact elearningadvisers@uq.edu.au.
Printing
If you are using QR codes feature, you would have created a pdf file. If you have a large cohort and many questions in the exam, Gradescope will split the exam papers into batches of approximately 700 pages.
Central examination:
You will need to combine all the pdf's into one file and upload the file into the Exam Portal. Exam Portal allows to upload only one file, so if you have 2 files - question and answer booklets, please email the papers to exams.internal@uq.edu.au and they will print the papers for you.
- Upload a sample (or the exact exam paper) to the Exam portal. This paper will only be released to the Library.
- In Exam Portal, add the following note: The uploaded paper is ONLY intended to be released to the Library. The exam papers to be printed for an actual exam will be emailed to exams.internal@uq.edu.au.
- Email the files to be printed to exams.internal@uq.edu.au with printing instructions (e.g. Print A - Answer Booklet (print and staple every three pages).
School-based examination:
Most commercial multifunction printing machines have the option to automatically staple the printed output in a specified cadence. (e.g. staple every 10 pages, or every 20 pages) This setting would most likely be under "finishing options" settings. UQ Print can do this type of printing.
