9. Create a graphic gap match question

The graphic gap match question requires students to match a term or a concept to an image. You can set up several matches in an image. In creating a graphic gap match, you will need an image to upload to the question. Please download the image here (ZIP, 30.5 KB).

Tasks to complete

Create a graphic gap match question

  1. Click on the Create New button.
  2. Select Graphic gap match under the Automatically marked questions list.
  3. Enter "Australian map" into the New Question textbox.
  4. Delete Replace with question text and enter "Drag the state or territory name to the correct location on the map. There are more names than needed. You will receive part marks on this question for each correct answer."

Add the image

  1. Click on the interaction area (Token 1, 2, 3).
  2. Click on the image icon in the interaction area.
  3. Click on the Background button.
  4. Click on the Upload image button. Please download the image here (ZIP, 1.1 MB) if you have not yet downloaded it.
  5. Click on the browse button. 
  6. Select the Graphic gap match image that you have downloaded.
  7. Click on the Open button.

Add the gaps

This question requires 8 gaps. Three gaps have been added by default.

  1. Click on the question text area (Replace this text with your question).
  2. Click on the Insert button 5 times to add 5 more gaps.
  3. Drag and drop the gaps to the relevant locations on the map.

Add the alternatives

  1. Click on the GAP1 (Token 1) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 1, and enter "Western Australia" into the textbox.
  1. Click on the GAP2 (Token 2) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 2, and enter "Northern Territory" into the textbox.
  1. Click on the GAP3 (Token 3) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 3, and enter "Queensland" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.

  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 4, and enter "New South Wales" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.
  1. Click on the GAP5 (Token 5) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 5, and enter "Australian Capital Territory" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.
  1. Click on the GAP6 (Token 6) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 6, and enter "Victoria" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.
  1. Click on the GAP7 (Token 7) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 7, and enter "Tasmania" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.
  1. Click on the GAP8 (Token 8) box.
  2. Click on the Correct Answers button on the right.
  3. Delete Token 8, and enter "South Australia" into the textbox.
  4. Click on the Close button.
  1. Click on the interaction area >> click on the Distractor button on the right (We want to have more options than needed to make the question more challenging).
  2. Click on the Add new distractor button.
  3. Delete "Alternative", and enter "Brisbane" into the textbox.
  4. Click on Add new distraction.
  5. Delete "Alternative", and enter "Canberra" into the textbox.
  6. Click on the Close button.

Note: The GAP textbox width can be adjusted using your mouse and it can be dragged and dropped to the required position in the image.

Add the mark 

  1. Click on the Marks button. By default,
  • Marks per correct answer is 1,
  • Marks per wrong answer is 0
  • Marks for unanswered is 0
  • Marks for all correct is blank
  • Minimum marks is blank

Note: For graphic gap match questions, you will only need to adjust the Marks per correct answer as required.

Add the labels

  1. Click on the Labels button on the right, enter  "your name", "test name", "Australia states map" and click on the plus button.

Note: Labels are useful for the author (e.g. course coordinator) to find the questions for future use.

  1. Click on the Preview button. The preview will be opened to a new tab on your browser.
  2. Close the preview window.
  3. Click on the Save button.
  4. Click on the Close button.
