8. Create a matching/pairing question

A matching/pairing question looks like a matrix in which students have to match an item with a category.

Create a matching/pairing question

Please download the images to use in this question here (zip file with 4 images).

  1. Click on the Create New button.
  2. Select Matching/pairing under the Automatically marked questions list.
  3. Enter "Australian landmarks" into the New Question textbox.
  4. Delete Replace with question text and enter "Match the correct landmark and the state or territory."
  5. Click on the interaction area (Please match the values).
  6. The prompt "Please match the values" is added by default. Delete the text "Please match the values" from the Prompt textbox.
  7. Click on the Columns button.
  • Enter Three sisters in the column label textbox.
  • Click on Add Image >> Click on Browse >> Select the Three sisters image >> Click on Insert. Click on Columns to expand it again.
  • Enter Twelve Apostles in the column label textbox.
  • Click on Add Image >> Click on Browse >> Select the Twelve Apostles image >> Click on Insert. Click on Columns to expand it again.
  • Click on the Add column button.
  • Enter Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the column label textbox.
  • Click on Add Image >> Click on Browse >> Select the Uluru (Ayers Rock) image >> Click on Insert. Click on Columns to expand it again.
  • Click on the Add column button.
  • Enter Great Barrier Reef in the column label textbox.
  • Click on Add Image >> Click on Browse >> Select the Great Barrier Reef image >> Click on Insert. Click on Columns to expand it again.
  1. Click on the Rows button.
  • Enter New South Wales in the row label textbox.
  • The green radio button is enabled under Three sisters for correct matching.
  • Enter Victoria in the row textbox.
  • The green radio button is enabled under Twelve Apostles for correct matching.
  • Click on the Add row button.
  • Enter Northern Territory in the row label textbox.
  • Select the radio button under Uluru (Ayers Rock) for correct matching.
  • Click on the Add row button.
  • Enter Queensland in the row label textbox.  
  • Select the radio button under Great Barrier Reef for correct matching.
  1. Click on the Options button. 
  • Normally, you would not need to enter the lower or the upper mark limit.
  • The randomization has been selected by default.
  1. Click on the Close button.
  2. Click on the Marks button. By default,
  • Marks per correct answer is 1, enter 0.5 for the correct answer.
  • Marks per wrong answer is 0
  • Marks for unanswered is 0
  • Marks for all correct is blank
  • Minimum marks is blank
  1. Click on the Labels button on the right, enter  "your name", "test name", "aus landmarks" and click on the plus button.

Note: Labels are useful for the author (e.g. course coordinator) to find the questions for future use.

  1. Click on the Preview button. The preview will be opened to a new tab on your browser.
  2. Close the preview window.
  3. Click on the Save button.
  4. Click on the Close button.
