YouTube videos can be embedded into your course without the need to copy and paste code. You can either insert the video directly into a content area or insert it anywhere there is a Text Editor (Announcements, Discussion Boards, Blogs, Journals, Wikis, Assignments and Tests).

Note: To use the YouTube mashup tool on campus you must be logged into the UQ Internet Quota System. i.e. Enter any external website address into your browser, enter your user name and password and click continue.

Access YouTube

There are two methods for embedding YouTube content:

Content Area

  1. Open the content area (i.e. Learning Resources or Assessment) where you need to embed a video. If needed open the appropriate folder or learning module.
  2. Click on the Build Content button.
  3. Select YouTube video from the menu.

Text Editor

  1. Create the required resources.
  2. Click on the Mashup button.
  3. Select YouTube video from the drop down list.

Search for video

  1. Enter the keywords you want to search for into the Search textbox.
  2. Select At least one of the words from the drop down list.
  3. Click the Go button.

  1. A page/s of search results will be displayed.
  2. Click the appropriate Preview button to view a video.

  1. Click the Player Controls button for more options.

  1. Close the preview and click on the Select button to embed the video into your content area.

  1. Edit the title in the Name textbox if needed.
  2. Write a bried description about the video in the Description textbox if needed.

Tip: Best practice is to include as much information as possible about the video.

Mash-up Options

  1. Select a view from the View drop down menu.
  • Thumbnail – click on a small image to open the video.
  • Text link with player – click on this link to open the video.
  • Embed video – a full size video link is inserted into the page.

Note: The owner of the YouTube video can disable the video from being embedded. It is recommended that you use the Thumbnail option.

  1. Optionally, select the Yes radio button the setting Show YouTube URL.
  2. Select the Yes radio button selected for the setting Show YouTube information.

Tip: Best practice is to include as much information as possible about the video.

Mashup options

Attachments (Content Area only)

  1. Click on the Browse My Computer button to upload a file from your computer.OR
  2. Click on the Browse Course button to link to a file you have previously uploaded to the course.

Tip: This option could be used to link a set of tutorial questions that were based on the video.

Standard Options and Submit

  1. Optionally, if you do not want students to view the video yet, select the No Permit Users to View this Content radio button.
  2. Optionally, if you want to know how many times the video is viewed, select the Track Number of Views radio button.
  3. Optionally, set Date and Time Restrictions.
  • If required, select the Display After checkbox and enter the date using the Date Selection Calendar and enter the time using the Time Selection Menu.
  • If required, select the Display Until checkbox and enter the date using the Date Selection Calendar and enter the time using the Time Selection Menu.
  1. Click on the Submit button.

Standard options and submit

  1. The video will be displayed in the content area as shown:

Note: The videos are external web content, so your students will need to login to the UO quota management system to view the video on campus
