Overview of Randomisation (Ultra)
Randomisation options can be used to make cheating more difficult in both invigilated and non-invigilated tests. There are options for randomisation in Learn.UQ (Blackboard) Ultra tests.
- Randomise questions
- Randomise answers
- Randomise pages
- Question pools
Randomise questions
Instructors can choose to randomize the order of questions within a test for each student. This randomisation option is selected in the Test settings.
Example
Student A | Student B |
Question 2 Question 6 Question 1 Question 3 Question 5 Question 4 | Question 3 Question 4 Question 1 Question 5 Question 2 Question 6 |
Randomise answers
Instructors can choose to randomize the order of answers in multiple choice and multiple answer questions within a test. This randomisation option is selected in the Test settings.
Warning: This randomisation option should not be used if you have questions that indicate a position in the list. (eg. ‘A and D’ or ‘All of the Above’).
Example
Student A | Student B |
Which living bird lays the world’s smallest egg? | Which living bird lays the world’s smallest egg? |
Question pools
Instructors can setup a question pool within a Test whereby students will be delivered X number of questions from the total number of questions selected from question banks or other tests. There are a number of ways to utilise question pools in a test.
One pool for a test
Create a Question Bank with all possible questions for the test. Randomly allocate some of the questions from the Question Bank to the test using a Question Pool i.e. 30 of 100 questions. Students will be allocated a random selection of questions from the chosen Question Bank each time the test is attempted. Therefore, every student is likely to receive a different set of questions (depending on the size of the pool).
Note: If you use this option, be sure to create your pools with the same question difficulty to ensure fairness in the examination.
Multiple pools for a test
You can use multiple Question Banks and Question Pools in the one test.
For example:
- Create a Question Bank per topic and use a Question Pool for each topic.
- Create a Question Bank per question and use Question Pool for each question.
