OHS content migration to Blackboard Essentials

January 2026November 2026

What is happening?

All OHS training modules that are currently located in Blackboard (Learn.UQ) will be migrated to Blackboard Essentials and uplifted to the new Blackboard Ultra format. This will provide several opportunities for improvements, including:

  • improving the usability of the modules, being housed in a dedicated instance of Blackboard
  • will bring the OHS modules into alignment with how existing all-student modules are being delivered, such as Respect at UQ and the Core Cultural modules
  • the modules will be housed in Blackboard Ultra courses, providing a modern look and feel in line with the course content students are familiar with
  • the project provides the opportunity to ensure all content is up to date and delivered in a reliable, user-friendly format

When will this be happening?

The work will be undertaken throughout 2026 with completion by the end of October, before the Blackboard Original end-of-life in late 2026, as advised by the Blackboard vendor.

Preparatory work and consultation is planned to continue throughout Semester 1, with content migration occurring during Semester 2.

Considerations

The following are points of consideration, and will be updated as new items are discovered throughout the project:

  • To ensure accurate reporting of student completion (in order to adhere with QLD legislation), module assessments must be delivered in a native Blackboard format.

Communications

03/03/2026: Stakeholders and content owners advised of the migration, and asked to: a.) nominate the most appropriate contacts for each module, and b.) identify any modules due for retirement that will not require migration.

07/04/2026: Kickoff meeting between ITS, eLearning, and content owners to cover an overview of the project, work involved, responsibilities, and compliance requirements. ITS and eLearning presented the following suggested options for content migration:

  1. Convert existing SCORM modules to native Blackboard Ultra modules, including the assessmentwithin the module (recommended). This will provide students with a positive user experience, the content will visually look very similar to what already exists, and the assessment will be built into the module itself to ensure completion.
  2. Upload the SCORM module without the assessment and create a separate Blackboard test that students can complete after finishing the module. Having a native Blackboard test is the only way that we can guarantee against the 5-20% failure rate with SCORM modules not passing completion data through to Gradebook (see eLearning guide on Advanced Authoring Tools for more information on SCORM failure rates).

Project team to review feedback regarding maintaining multiple versions of modules for staff and student delivery, and identify potential solutions. Additional OHS modules were identified by content owners, and will be included within the project scope.
