Identifying hurdles with a hurdle marking schema (Ultra)

To help identify students who have not met a hurdle requirement, instructors can use a marking schema linked to a calculated column to clearly indicate whether a student has passed or failed.

Note: If your course has multiple hurdles you may need to create additional hurdle columns to assist in identifying students that have failed these hurdles.

2. Create a hurdle column

  1. Select Gradebook from the navigation bar.
    Tip: The default view is Grid view, if you are in List view, please click on the Grid view (4 squares) button.
  2. Decide where you want to place the column. 
  3. Click on the Add new gradebook column (+) button.
    Tip: It is recommended that the Hurdle column is placed at the beginning of your Gradebook next to your Total Percentage column.

  1. Select Add Total Calculation from the drop-down list.

  1. Click on the New Total Calculation Title and enter a meaningful title. e.g Hurdle.
  2. Select Points for the Calculation Type.
  3. Uncheck the Calculate marks based on points earned out of total marked points checkbox.
    Warning: this setting is unchecked so that all required assessments are included in the grade calculation and assumes that if a task does not have a mark recorded it is treated as though the student has received a mark of zero (0) for that task.
  4. Select Pass/fail hurdle from the Select a mark schema drop-down box.
    Note: Your mark schema may have a different name so select the schema that matches your requirements.

  1. Click on the Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button for any categories that contain 0 items.
    Tip: The Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button will change to purple when it is being excluded.

  1. Expand Categories that contain items. e.g. Exam
    Tip: Click on the down arrow next to the Category to expand.

  1. Review each category (that contains an item), click on the Unlink (Link icon with diagonal line) button to add an individual item to the total calculation.
    Tip: You are looking for the items (assessments) that need to be included in your Hurdle column.

  1. Click on the Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button for the category once required items have been unlinked.
    Tip: The Exclude category (circle with diagonal line) button will change to purple when it is being excluded.

  1. Review Calculations.
    Tip: Calculations contains any calculated columns that you may have created in your Gradebook. e.g. Total quiz column.
  2. Review No Category.
    Tip: No category contains any column that is associated with LTI tools e.g. Turnitin.
  3. Review Calculations.
    Tip: Calculations contains any calculated columns that you may have created in your Gradebook. e.g. Total quiz column.
  4. Review Total Points is correct.
    Note: The total points should be equal to the point value of the hurdle task.
  5. Click on the Save button.

  1. Click on the Close (X) button.

  1. The hurdle column will be displayed.
    Note: Depending on how you have setup your mark schema will determine what is displayed in the Hurdle column.
