Marks / Rubrics / Grading Forms Overview guide for information on the different types of rubrics available in TurnItIn.

Note: TurnItIn rubrics are different to Blackboard rubrics. It is not possible to use a Blackboard rubric in TurnItIn.

Note: The availability of rubrics is based on who is logged on, not what Blackboard course the TurnItIn is accessed from. Your tutors will be able to use the rubric you select for marking. 

To pass a rubric on to another staff member, you need to export the rubric/form and they will need to import it into TurnItIn (refer to the Export / Import a Rubric/Form guide).

Another option would be to share the spreadsheet the rubric is based on.

Argument 15%

Argument and analysis (Clarity)

Rigorously argued; very high standard of critical analysis; logical structure clear and perspicuous.

Generally well argued but includes some points requiring more careful exposition or clarification.

Confusion; flawed and disorderly analysis; irrelevance, no sequiturs, incoherent argument.

Evidence 35%

Excellent and original illustrations, examples or supporting quotations.

Satisfactory examples, textual support or quotations.

Conclusion 30%

Major themes of essay are drawn together and well supported.

Generally well supported, some gaps remain.

Acceptable, some significant issues not adequately addressed.

Scholarship and sources

Extensive research, careful and balanced selection of representative sample key points.

Standard range of references, satisfactory choice of key texts.

Fails to refer to recommended readings and key text or other suitable alternatives.

Add a rubric

It is recommended that rubrics be created in a spreadsheet and uploaded to TurnItIn. The advantage of this is that rubrics can then be easily copied into your ECP (Electronic Course Profile) and assignment instructions.

Complete the rubric

Note: The criteria percentage weightings and standard marks are not included in the spreadsheet.

  1. Copy and paste rows to add additional criterion.
  2. Copy and paste columns to add additional standards.
  3. Change the criterion titles, standard titles (or delete) and criterion/standard descriptions.

Note: The criterion titles are limited to 13 characters (including spaces). If the criterion title is too long, leave it as Criterion X and enter the title underneath as the criterion description.

Import the spreadsheet into TurnItIn

A rubric can be added when you first setup your TurnItIn assignment under Optional settings or by editing an existing assignment.

  1. Navigate to the required assignment link.
  2. Hover over the assignment title.
  3. Click on the arrow and select Edit from the drop down list.
  4. Scroll down and click on the Launch Rubric/Form Manger link in Optional settings

  1. Click on the Export/Import button.
  2. Select Import from the drop down list.

  1. Click on the Select files button.
  2. Browse to and select the complete rubric template.
  3. Click on the View button.

  1. Enter a name for the rubric.
  2. Click on the Standard rubric icon.
  3. Click on each Scale value, enter the required number.

Note: The Scale value can be entered to two decimal places, though the final total mark returned to the Grade Centre will rounded to a whole number.

  1. Click on each Criterion weighting, enter the required percentage.
  2. Enter an achievement description in each Criteria / Scale textbox.
  3. Click on the SAVE button.
  4. Click on the CLOSE button.

  1. Select the required rubric from the Rubric drop down list.
